The success of the medication means that if everyone affected by this disease is completely treated then there will be no more virus spread. The study found that among nearly 1,000 male couples across Europe, one of the partners had been receiving treatment to suppress HIV, there were no instances of infection even through intimate relationships that were unprotected.
Although during the 8-year study, 15 males turned out to have taken the virus, DNA tests showed that they had had contacts with other persons than the partner who were not medicated. Previous studies have also shown that treatment protects heterosexual couples in cases where a partner is affected by HIV.
