Turkish prosecutors open investigations into the election process in Istanbul

Turkish prosecutors launched 32 investigations into allegations of irregularities in Istanbul's local elections and called more than 100 polling station officials to question them as suspects, the state agency Anadolu said on Thursday.

The People's Party, which is the main opposition party (CHP), in alliance with the smaller parties, won the Istanbul and Ankara municipalities, ending a quarter-century control by the AK Party of President Taip Erdogan and his Islamic ancestors. Erdogan has called for the cancellation of the vote in Istanbul and the re-launch of the election process there, a prospect that has held Turkish financial markets on the scene since the March 31 elections. The Electoral High Council (YSK) has not yet decided on PAK's request for Istanbul's election result, but has ordered constituency officials in Istanbul to conduct inspections of polling officials. Anadolu said the investigations focused on the Maltepe, Kadikoy and Atasehir districts of Istanbul, all three of which were won by CHP. The suspects are being questioned about allegations of violations of the electoral law and abuse of the ballot counting position, the news agency said. Part of the criminal appeals were filed by the AKP and its ally, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), while others were filed by district election boards, she said. The Istanbul Prosecutor's Office declined to comment. AKP Vice President Ali Ihsan Yavuz said that presumptive individuals were selected as ballot box officials ahead of the election as part of an orchestrated bout. "We see very clearly that there have been some movements and operations completely organized to cheat on the ballot boxes, starting two years ago," he said, adding that criminal appeals will also be raised against others.
