Violent clashes and casualties in Karacha, Venezuela
One woman was shot dead, while dozens more were injured in Venezuelan capital Karakas in clashes between opposition supporters and pro-government forces. The army threw tear gas and threw water through pressure pumps to disperse rival demonstrators.
Opposition leader Juan Guaido called for the assassination of 27-year-old woman murderers, prompting public sector employees to strike this Thursday, forcing President Nicolas Maduro to resign.
In January, Guaido hesitated as Venezuela's provisional president, and has since been recognized by more than 50 states, including the United States, Great Britain, and Latin American nations.
Being the head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, he used an article in the Constitution that gave him the opportunity to take the presidency's provisional leadership, arguing that Maduro's re-election last year was illegal.
But Maduro, who is supported by Russia, China, and the Venezuelan army chief, has refused to give up power. President Maduro also denied suggestions that he was ready to abandon the country, accusing the United States of leading a coup attempt. According to him, "those involved in this attempt will be punished".
